Denver Water’s Gross Reservoir Expansion Project will raise the height of the existing dam by 131 feet, almost tripling the reservoir’s capacity. When complete, Gross Reservoir will be Denver Water’s second largest reservoir and will provide essential flexibility and resiliency to our customers in the face of increasing impacts from climate change.
Gross Dam was completed in the 1950s and was designed to be raised to meet the future water needs of Colorado’s Front Range. After a 19-year permitting process, the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project broke ground on April 1, 2022. In May of 2024, we will begin placing roller-compacted concrete, or RCC, to raise the dam. The concrete will be batched on-site to build 118 steps from the bottom of the existing dam to the new dam crest, a total of 471 feet. Construction of the new steps is expected to last through 2025.
This is the largest dam raise in the U.S. and the largest RCC dam raise worldwide. When complete, Gross Dam will be the tallest RCC dam in the country and the tallest dam in Colorado.
The registration fee includes transportation to and from the convention center along with lunch. All participants are required to ride the bus to and from the site. Participants will be required to wear hard hats, gloves, glasses, long pants, vests, and closed-toed shoes. Participants are required to bring their own PPE.
