After retiring from Maryland's Dam Safety Program in 2021 with more than 37 years of service, Hal Van Aller now works part-time with Blossom Consulting and Engineering in Williamsburg, Virginia assisting with geotechnical aspects of dam repair, dam removal, and stream restoration projects. He attained his MS in geotechnical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1989 and BS in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 1979. He has been a member of ASDSO since 1985, was its president in 2019-2020, and served on the board of directors from 2012 to 2021. He has been active on several committees which developed guidance manuals for “Conduits through Embankment Dams (2005) and “Use of Plastic Pipes in Dams” (2007). He is a subject natter expert (SME) for the the DamSafetyToolbox, and is part of the FEMA/ICODS Dam Safety Research Workgroup. He is registered as a professional engineer in Maryland and Virginia.
