Mark Ahlstrom attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah between 1989-1996, where he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil / Geotechnical Engineering. From 1996 – 2011, he worked as an engineering consultant for Landau Associates in Edmonds, WA; GEI Consultants in Englewood, CO, and URS Corporation in Englewood CO and Gaithersburg, MD. In 2011, Mark joined the US Army Corps of Engineers, Risk Management Center, where he helped develop procedures for performing risk assessments on USACE’s dams and levees. In 2021, Mark joined the USACE Dam Safety Modification Center in Huntington, WV. Mark has worked on large civil engineering projects of all types - from initial investigation through design and construction. He has worked in the continental US, Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Asia, primarily on large hydroelectric dam projects, and has been the lead facilitator for risk assessments of over 30 USACE’s dams. Since 2018, Mark has lead risk assessments for USACE’s largest 3 reservoirs - all on the Upper Missouri River - Oahe dam in South Dakota, Garrison dam in North Dakota, and Fort Peck dam in Montana.
